Bathroom lighting is different to any other lighting in your house. This is due to the fact that your bathroom lighting will need to be able to withstand the water and steam that is present when you are showering or running a bath.
Below is a visual representation of the bathroom zones followed with the current regulations. This guide is only meant as a guide to help you choose your lighting. We always recommend you checking with a competent electrician any questions you may have regarding the positioning of your lights in the bathroom.
Each bathroom lighting zone negates minimum IP ratings for lighting to be safely used in that zone.
Bathroom Zone 0
Zone 0 is inside the bath or shower itself. Any fitting going in this area must be 12V low voltage and have an IP rating of at least IP67.
Bathroom Zone 1
Zone 1 is immediately above the bath or shower up to a height of 2.25m from the floor. Lights in this area should be IP65 rated or higher. IP44 rated products can used if used in conjunction with a 30MA RCD.
Bathroom Zone 2
Zone 2 is within 60cm of the outside edge of the shower, bath or sinks. All lighting in this area should be rated at a minimum of IP44.
Bathroom Zone 3
Zone 3 is basically everything outside zone 0, 1 and 2 where there is no likelihood of a water jet being present.
IP (Ingress Protection) ratings are defined by two numbers (for example IP44). The first number ascertains to the protection against solid foreign objects such as fingers, tools and dust. The second number refers to the protection against the ingress of water and moisture.
First Digit (Ingress of solid foreign objects)
0 No protection
1 Protected against solids >50mm
2 Protected against solids >12.5mm
3 Protected against solids >2.5mm
4 Protected against solids >1mm
5 Dust Protected
6 Dust Tight
Second Digit (Ingress of moisture / liquid)
0 No protection
1 Protected against vertical falling water droplets
2 Protected against condensation
3 Protected against <15° water spray from vertical
4 Protected against <60° water spray from vertical
5 Protected against water spray from any direction
6 Protected against low pressure water jets
7 Protected against higher pressure water jets
8 Protected against temporary immersion
9 Protected against full immersion to specified pressure
